When it was first unveiled in 1966, the iconic Lamborghini Miura possessed the power to evoke respect and awe in anyone who witnessed the world’s first super sports car. The Miura was only in production for seven years, yet its immense impact on the automotive world will be felt eternally, and it all began with a fairly simple concept.
The Miura was a road car with racing pedigree—a vehicle that could drive Lamborghini to victory on the track, but could also be enjoyed on the road by motoring enthusiasts. It was a simple enough idea, but one that would forever change the automotive world. Three of Lamborghini’s top engineers, Gian Paolo Dallara, Paolo Stanzani and Bob Wallace, developed the prototype known simply as the P400, with a transversely mounted mid-engine design and a powerful V12, a bold departure from the preceding Lamborghini models.
Fifty years later, the Miura is still celebrated as one of the greatest cars ever built. At the 2016 Amelia Concours d’Elegance, Lamborghini displayed six impeccable editions of the timeless vehicle, including a fully restored 1971 Miura SV in Verde Metallizzato – the first vehicle certified by the Lamborghini PoloStorico program. The presentation was a true testament to the Miura’s distinguished place within Lamborghini and automotive history as a whole.
In 2016, Lamborghini is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the iconic Miura with a unique, exciting drive through Italy ‒ just for Miura owners. The Miura Tour will twist along the roads of Emilia Romagna, Liguria and Tuscany as it retraces the history of the car and connects with the great individuals who helped conceive it. As wonderful Italian landscapes unfold, from cities of art to those along the coast, drivers and their passengers will enjoy warm temperatures and the taste of renowned Italian cuisine. A glamorous route for an iconic car. A glamorous route for an iconic car.
Soon Lamborghini is kicking off celebrations for the 50th Anniversary of the Miura with an art exhibit entitled, “Velocità e Colore” (Speed and Color), which will be on display from April 28 to June 30 at Lamborghini’s historic museum in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy. Local artist Alfonso Borghi from Campegine (Reggio Emilia) was invited to interpret the Miura and the marque of the Raging Bull. Their spirit, essence and colors are expressed in his ten works on display.
The Miura’s impact on the automotive world persists to this day. Credited with originating the trend of two-seater, mid-engine super sports cars with an emphasis on outstanding performance, it forged a new category in the automotive industry.
